How To Stay Awake During A Rave

I’m sure many ravers have mixed emotions about going to an EDM show or rave that starts around 11 at night or later. To be honest, I’ve always wondered why some raves start and end so late. But in my opinion, something about being awake late at night/early morning while the world around us is asleep is such an interesting and strange yet calming feeling. Before I really got into EDM music and started going to shows every weekend, I had no idea how much of an impact it would have on my sleep schedule.

Staying awake at a rave late at night can be pretty difficult. Especially when all you want is to see your favorite artist play their set, but all your body wants is to lay down and rest. Our bodies start to crave sleep when we’re up late past our bedtime. Here are some tips and advice to help you stay awake, alert, and engaged during overnight raves and shows.

Why Do Our Bodies Want To Sleep?

We all spend about one-third of our lives either sleeping or attempting to do so. Our bodies start to shut down when we lack proper sleep. Sleep is an essential function that allows our body and mind to recharge. When we wake up from a good sleep, we feel refreshed and alert. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly. Regularly getting the right amount of sleep also helps the body remain healthy and prevent diseases.

How To Stay Awake During A Late Night Rave

Get A Good Nights Sleep

First and foremost, get a good night’s sleep the night before. And if you didn’t get good sleep, try to nap for 1.5 hours before the event. A power nap can also do wonder if you don’t have enough time to rest for longer. Sleep helps our brain repair and replenish. It is a significant part of our daily schedules. Without enough healthy sleep, our brain cannot function properly. It’s important to be well-rested at a rave or any event in general in case of an emergency.

Consume Caffeine

Although everyone is different, caffeine can have positive impacts on physical and cognitive functioning in which it can help you stay awake. Drink a cup of caffeinated coffee or tea (or a Guayakí Yerba Mate – my favorite!) before the event to help boost your energy. However, the more is NOT the merrier. Be mindful of how much caffeine you consume. Drinking too much caffeine can cause side effects such as nausea, anxiety, nervousness, and increased heart rate.

Other options include Red Bull, Monster, Bang, and so on. Although these artificial energy drinks may do the trick, they may also cause a sugar crash.

Eat Some Brain Food

Whether you’re running around trying to figure out your rave outfit or hanging with friends, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and forget to eat. Eat a healthy meal before heading to the event. Energy-boosting foods especially fruits and vegetables will fuel you so you can dance all night long. Even if you’re not hungry, force yourself to eat!

Vitamins & Supplements

Along with other B vitamins, vitamin B12 is well known to help transform your food into energy. It also promotes good nerve and blood cell health to prevent anemia which can make you weak and tired. Vitamin B12 is found naturally in animal proteins such as meat, fish, and dairy products. B12 deficiency occurs when your body does not get enough or is unable to absorb the amount you need. Although everyone is different, B12 supplements can help boost energy levels.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral that is found in the body that impacts muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and energy production. It promotes better sleep and is an excellent source of energy. Magnesium is commonly found in foods like fish, almonds, and whole grains.

Iron

Iron helps oxygen circulate throughout the body and allows for the body’s cells to function and develop properly. Many anemic people show impaired cognitive abilities, decreased immunity, and poor work performance due to an iron deficiency.

Party Steadily Throughout The Night

Try not to go all out at the beginning of the night! If you know it’s going to be a long night, keep in mind you’ll need to save some of your energy for later. Although the music may be tempting, start the night out slowly and ease your way into party mode!

Conclusion

With some shows and events going until sunrise, I’m sure we can all agree the rave community knows how to party. Staying awake at these events can be pretty difficult, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. We hope these tips and advice help you stay awake, alert, and engaged throughout the night so you don’t have to worry about having to leave early or missing your favorite artist.
